A fixed belly ring consists of a ring, or hoop, on one end and a permanently attached round bead on the other. The ring is inserted through the skin near the navel and the bead then holds both ends together. Most fixed beads unscrew for removal of the ring. If this is your first piercing, or if you experience pain or resistance when attempting to remove your fixed belly ring, consult your piercer for instructions.
Step 1
Wash your hands with soap and water to remove any dirt and bacteria. Introducing germs to your piercing site can lead to infection. This risk is even higher if your belly button piercing is new and not completely healed, explains the Association of Professional Piercers.
Step 2
Sterilize the belly ring and the piercing site with hydrogen peroxide. Apply the peroxide to all sides of the ring using a cotton swab.
Step 3
Lubricate the area by smearing some antibiotic ointment on the piercing site and belly button ring using a second cotton swab. This will reduce friction and minimize pain when you remove the fixed belly ring.
Step 4
Grab the bottom of the belly ring with the fingers on one hand, and then use the fingers on your other hand to securely grip the ball. Twist the ball in a clockwise direction until it comes loose.
Step 5
Pull the ring out of your belly using steady, gentle pressure. Stop if you experience pain or bleeding. A bit of discomfort is normal.
Step 6
Wipe off any remaining antibiotic ointment with a clean paper towel, and then use a cotton ball to rub the area with hydrogen peroxide.
