Diversity in the workplace is commonly defined as a variety of skills, beliefs, attitudes and opinions in a business or work environment that adds dimension, ideas and approaches to business models and strategies for success. Diversity, according to the Catherwood Library of Cornell University, is the inclusion of everyone in the workplace for the purpose of organizing and running a business without discrimination of gender, race or cultural belief systems. Encouraging respect for such diversity in the workplace offers employers and employees certain challenges that can be overcome with patience and understanding.
Step 1
Educate yourself and your employees regarding the beliefs of others. Employers and employees should be aware of different cultures and belief systems to encourage tolerance and compassion among everyone in the workplace.
Step 2
Talk about prejudice at meetings or gatherings and state that prejudice or prejudicial leanings are not tolerated at your company. Diversity not only concerns the concepts of tolerance and prejudice. According to the University of Florida, diversity concerns the differences among individuals rather than groups of people.
Step 3
Take steps to reduce or eliminate potential discrimination in your work environment. Discrimination is not merely about gender, race or belief, but also age, social standing, and physical appearance. Put forth a no tolerance policy concerning verbal harassment or other forms of harassment in the workplace. Create a disciplinary guideline on dealing with those who personify less than desirable social traits in the workplace and offer them counseling and guidance. If they refuse to comply, warn them of possible repercussions, such as suspension or termination.
Step 4
Determine how negative attitudes against others may affect your business or the ability of your employees to work together. Discuss such issues with employees and encourage everyone to participate in workshops, discussions and groups to identify potential problem areas before they get out of control. Encourage awareness of the work environment and self-awareness among employees to determine if one or more employees experiences difficulty with others.
Step 5
Hire individuals of different races and cultures to promote a well-rounded staff of individuals. A variety of different viewpoints, opinions and attitudes may help your business achieve global diversity and acceptance and serve as an example to successful business practices of the 21st century.
Step 6
Suggest employees from all levels offer their ideas on increasing diversity and tolerance in the workplace. Get them on board for a company-wide change in policy and include them in the process of devising methods for handling diversity problems in your workplace.
