Once school ends and the long, hot summer vacation looms ahead, Richmond, Virginia parents may be wondering what they are going to do to keep their kids entertained and active for three months. Fortunately, Richmond offers a variety of activities to keep your kids engaged and healthy even during the hottest summer heat waves. So if your child is into sports, entertainment or simply seeing the sights, Richmond has an activity for him.

Performing Arts

Dance, sing and entertain at Bravo, a Richmond summer camp offered by SPARC, the School for Performing Arts in the Richmond Community. Four-week sessions are offered in the summer to kids who want to learn how to perform in front of an audience. At the end of the session, participants get to invite their family and friends to see them perform on a live stage where they show off their singing, dancing and acting abilities. The cost of the session is $675 for the month as of 2010. Participants receive professional head shots and T-shirts. Other performing arts day camps are available at St. Catherine's School and the Montpelier Center Summer Art and Theater Camp, located in nearby Montpelier.

Byrd Park

Ride the pedal boats or fish in the lake at Byrd Park during the dog days of summer. Located in the heart of Richmond, Byrd Park offers attractions, such as the unique Round House, concerts at the Carillion and an exercise trail. Picnic in the park, play tennis or softball or walk around an actual Swan Lake at this attractive venue.

Sports Camps

Get your game on at a variety of summer sports camps which take place in Richmond. The University of Richmond offers baseball, basketball, soccer, hockey, lacrosse and more to area youth. Richmond Strikers and Richmond Kickers both offer boys and girls soccer camps. Both camps offer recreational soccer, advanced, travel and goalkeeper camps. The Kickers offer a unique, street soccer camp as well.

Swim Teams

Don't sweat the summer by joining one of the many area Richmond swim teams. Teams are located at neighborhood swim associations and are also available at NOVA of Virginia Aquatics. Additionally, the Richmond area YMCAs have year-round swim teams for youth.

Parks

Batter up at Bogey's Sports Park. Kids and parents can play miniature golf or practice in the batting cages or on the golf practice range. If golf or baseball isn't your thing, cool off with some whitewater fun at the Adventure Challenge. Take a two-day beginner course on the James River learning the basics of kayaking and water safety and end the session by learning advanced whitewater techniques.
