The definition of health food is as varied as the number of people you ask or online searches you do. Some would give you a list of foods that are deemed to be healthy, while others would provide a definition similar to the definition of organic food. Regardless of the exact definition, a health food diet plan is one that focuses on specific foods to improve one's health or to maintain a healthy weight.

Definitions

The World's Healthiest Foods website explains that the foods selected as healthiest are based on nutrient density, a measurement of nutrient content in the food. While the definition of health food could be debated, certain foods are consistently listed as healthy: fruits, vegetables, lean dairy, and nuts and legumes. You can build a diet based on consuming these healthy foods.

Setting Your Diet Plan

The Mayo Clinic staff writes that it is more important to apply certain nutrition basics to healthy eating rather than to try follow the latest nutrition trends. The writer recommends that you first consider your own health concerns, whether you need to eat less sodium, less fat, or more calcium. This way, you meet your health needs before falling into a trend that could cause you more harm. Consult your primary health provider before making changes to your diet if you have risk factors for diseases, such as high blood pressure or high blood cholesterol.

Healthy Diet Recommendations

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that a healthy diet emphasizes a variety of foods, including fruit, vegetables, lean meat, low-fat dairy, whole grains, legumes, nuts, eggs and beans. It also recommends consuming a diet low in trans fats, saturated fats, cholesterol, salt and added sugars. This automatically forces you to reach for whole foods, because many processed foods are higher in added salt, sugar and fats.

Considerations for Low-Carbohydrate Diet Plans

While some diet plans suggest restricting your carbohydrate intake, you should only restrict refined carbohydrates. Refined carbohydrates have had the germ and hull removed from the grain, resulting in a light but nutritionally hollow product. Controlling how many refined carbohydrates will automatically cause you to reduce your intake of junk foods like packaged cookies. Whole grains are heartier and provide more nutrition. If you focus on eating whole grains, you will get more fiber, vitamins and minerals in your diet. These healthy foods are helpful in making you feel more satisfied, reduce your risk for several chronic diseases and help control your weight, according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Considerations for High-Protein Diet Plans

It is important that you eat enough protein for your muscle strength and health, but too much protein can contribute to poor health. Diet plans that emphasize high protein or specific types of protein based on blood type usually do not have scientific evidence to support the claims. Despite this, the type of protein you eat is still important. The Harvard School of Public Health's The Nutrition Source shows that protein comes in several forms, both in meat and non-meat forms. Fish and chicken are the better sources of protein due to the lower fat content as compared to red meat sources. When you eat meat, trim the excess fat or skin from the meat, in order to control the calories and fat.
