Many diet plans are so complex, it's no wonder that the most extreme ones tend not to have long-lasting results. Many complex diets are also simply unhealthy, unbalanced and can lead to boredom. If you're interested in losing weight in a healthy way, the best approach is a simple one. A simple diet that is based on scientific research is the food pyramid. This diet isn't a fad, either: It's a balanced way to eat a variety of foods you can use for weight loss and as your long-term way of eating.

Features of a Simple Diet

A simple diet to lose weight should emphasize eating as many unprocessed foods as possible, rather than highly processed foods. The best foods at the core of the food pyramid are fresh fruits, vegetables, whole-grain products and lean dairy foods. The largest part of your daily intake should focus on these unprocessed, nutrient-dense foods that are low in calories and high in dietary fiber. Fiber is a key to curbing hunger; Harvard University recommends you consume at least 20 grams of fiber every day.

Benefits of a Simple Diet

A simple diet that follows the food pyramid closely is one of the easiest ways to lose weight without sacrificing nutritional value. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, being overweight is one of the most common causes of death in the United States. Losing weight can decrease your risk of cardiovascular disease, adult-onset diabetes and some types of cancer. Knowing that simple dietary changes that emphasize healthy foods can actually keep you from getting sick is one of the best reasons to lose weight.

Examples of Simple Diet Meals

A simple diet meal should contain a lean protein, such as an egg-white omelet, skinless chicken breast or low-fat cottage cheese, lightly steamed fresh vegetables or a salad, brown rice or a baked potato and fresh fruit for dessert. Most healthy foods require only minor preparation, and you can carry fresh fruit with you anywhere for a quick snack. In lieu of lean meat, you can also eat low-fat tofu or beans with brown rice to get the protein your body needs.

Considerations

One thing to consider when following a simple diet to lose weight is how to stick to the diet when you aren't at home. Fortunately, you can easily carry fresh, unprocessed foods with you to work or school. Most restaurants also offer healthy meals, such as salads and sandwiches. You can even make a meal out of appetizers or side dishes that are healthy, such as a baked potato or unbuttered vegetables.

Warnings

Always check with your doctor before making significant dietary changes. If you have an existing illness or condition, the simple diet may need some adjustment to better suit your specific dietary needs. If you drink alcohol, remember that it contains calories and should be used only in moderation. Red wine has been found to have antioxidants and, when consumed in moderate amounts, may lower your risk of heart attack.
