Low thyroid function, or hypothyroidism, occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce the hormones necessary to regulate the body's metabolism. As a result, weight gain often occurs. Losing weight with hypothyroidism involves stimulating the thyroid gland to produce the hormones necessary to burn calories. Some nutritionists believe that you can lose weight with a thyroid disorder by increasing your intake of certain foods.
Alternative therapy should never replace medical treatment for hypothyroidism. Consult your doctor before using any alternative treatment to lose weight with this condition.
Step 1
Add kelp to your diet, advises Dr. James F. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." Kelp is a sea vegetable that is a rich source of iodine. Iodine is necessary for proper thyroid function.
Step 2
Avoid adding thyme to your foods. According to Michael Castleman, author of "The Healing Herbs," the chemical compounds in thyme may suppress thyroid activity.
Step 3
Take a B complex vitamin supplement, advises Dr. Balch. B vitamins improve the supply of oxygen to the body's cells and improves the body's ability to use energy derived from food sources, which may help promote weight loss. B complex vitamins may also stimulate the secretion of thyroid hormones. Dr. Balch recommends a dose of 100mg three times per day. Talk to your physician before taking a B complex vitamin supplement.
Step 4
Avoid toothpastes and other products that contain fluoride. According to Dr. Balch, fluoride may inhibit the thyroid gland's ability to absorb iodine, which may result in reduced production of hormones that convert glucose and other fuels into energy.
