How to Turn a Bassett Crib to a Toddler Bed

Basset produces a line of cribs designed to convert to a variety of layouts, including a toddler bed. This allows the crib to grow with your child, minimizing the amount of money you need to spend on new furnishings. The crib consists of four sides: a head board, a foot board, a tall side panel and a short side panel; the process of converting the crib to toddler-bed form involves removing this short side panel and, if desired, installing side rails in its place.

Step 1

Strip the bedding from the crib's mattress and remove it from the crib. Lift the edge of the mattress located nearest the crib's lower side panel. If possible, lift the entire mattress free of the crib; otherwise, pull the edge of the mattress over the side of the crib until you are able to lower it to the ground.

Step 2

Inspect the head and foot panels of the crib and locate the screws or bolts securing the crib's lower side in place. Use a Phillips screwdriver or Allen wrench to remove the screws or bolts, then lift the sliding side free of the crib.

Step 3

Lift the mattress frame and adjust it to the lowest setting. If your model of crib comes packaged with side rails and you wish to install these components, fit the side rails into the open section of the crib, such that the holes in the side rails line up with those previously used by the lower side panel; use the packaged fasteners to secure the side rails into place.

Step 4

Place the mattress onto the crib's mattress frame; if you are unable to lift the entire mattress, lift one edge and place it on the open end of the crib. Push the bottom edge upwards until the mattress falls into the frame. Replace the mattress' bedding.

Step 5

Save the lower side rail after you have removed it, in case you wish to reconfigure the toddler bed for use as a crib with another child; some models of crib also require you to use the lower side rail as the foot board when converting to a full-sized bed.

Tips and Warnings

  • The side rail accessories are designed to help transition your child from the crib to the toddler bed; when your child is comfortable with the new bed and no longer rolls against the rails, you may remove the accessories from the bed frame.
