As people age, the skin becomes drier, thinner and more susceptible to sun damage. The results of the aging process emerge as fine lines and wrinkles. Causes of wrinkles include family history, smoking and exposure to sun. Over-the-counter wrinkle creams provide some benefit for reducing wrinkles; however, the most effective methods usually involve a visit to your dermatologist. She can examine your wrinkles and assist in recommending a procedure that provides the quickest results.

Step 1

Request microdermabrasion treatments. With this technique, small crystals are blown onto the skin. This causes friction, removing small amounts of the top layer of skin. Side effects may include slight skin redness. Multiple sessions are usually needed to keep the skin appearing smoother.

Step 2

Use dermabrasion treatments. Dermabrasion is a treatment that sands down the top layer of skin with a fast-moving brush. Once the top layer of skin is removed, new skin with a smoother appearance grows. Side effects of this procedure include redness, swelling and scabbing, but they usually last only a couple of weeks or less.

Step 3

Request botulinum toxin type A treatments, also known as Botox®. A dermatologist injects this substance into the wrinkle site, preventing the muscles from tightening. The results are less wrinkles and fine lines on the face. Botox® is most effective for frown lines and crow's feet. You will need to schedule additional treatments periodically to maintain the results.

Step 4

Schedule a chemical peel. During this treatment, a dermatologist applies an acid solution to wrinkles and fine lines. As the top layer of skin heals, new and less wrinkled skin grows. The treatment is also effective for reducing the appearance of brown spots.

Step 5

Use soft-tissue fillers for deep wrinkles. Fillers, such as collagen or fat, are injected into the deep wrinkles on the skin. The fillers plump up the wrinkles, which make the skin appear less wrinkled. Treatments are needed every few months to maintain the results.

Tips and Warnings

  • Over-the-counter wrinkle creams may have a small effect on wrinkles, according to MayoClinic.com. If you want to get rid of fine lines and wrinkles faster, however, partner with a dermatologist to get access to more effective options.
  • Procedures to remove wrinkles are usually considered cosmetic, and most health insurance plans don't cover the cost. Talk with your doctor about procedure costs to choose the quickest results that fit your budget.
