Periodontal disease is caused by excessive plaque build up around the teeth. The two common forms of the disease are gingivitis and periodontitis. Signs and symptoms include swollen, bleeding gums, bad breath and loose teeth. However, according to The American Dental Association, a person may not have any warning signs and still suffer from periodontal disease. Receiving regular checkups and appropriate dental care at home is extremely important. A variety of home remedies can be used to keep health clean and healthy.
Drink Green Tea
In a 2009 study published in "Journal of Periodontology," it was confirmed that participants who consumed green tea had less periodontal disease, as well as an increase in overall periodontal health. Drink one to two cups of green tea daily.
Daily Brushing
Brush your teeth after every meal. Use a toothbrush that has soft bristles and is not older than three months. Electric toothbrushes and water picks are also popular to remove plaque and bacteria from the mouth. Remember to brush teeth more than 30 seconds; three to five minutes is recommended. Always brush the teeth, but also brush at the gum line where plaque first forms.
Floss
Floss teeth after eating to remove bacteria and food particles stuck between teeth. Floss on a regular basis. Consider tooth and dental picks to remove food bits that are lodged between teeth.
Clean Your Tongue
Remove bacteria from the tongue by scraping. Use a dull object such as a spoon or popsicle stick. Scrape from the back to the front of the tongue 10 to 15 times. A thorough tongue cleaning is beneficial if performed several times a week.
Hydrogen Peroxide Rinse
Mix a solution of equal parts water and 3 percent hydrogen peroxide. Swish and gargle with mixture and spit. Use solution several times a week to clean and disinfect your mouth.
