Home Remedy for Rheumatoid Arthritis Pain Relief

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that causes severe pain and inflammation at the joints. The wrists, fingers, knees and feet are most commonly affected. More woman than men suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. The disease can occur at any age, however is prevalent in people between the ages of 40 and 60, according to The Mayo Clinic. A variety of home remedies and treatments are available to decrease the symptoms associated with arthritis pain.

Step 1

Apply heat and warmth to the affected areas. Shower or take a hot bath for 15 minutes daily. Add 1/2 cup of Epsom salt to bath water for muscle relief. Use a heating pad or blanket to increase the temperature to the specific area. Herbal hot packs that you heat in the microwave also work.

Step 2

Lose weight if needed. Supporting additional weight can add strain and pressure to aching joints. Eat foods rich in protein, as well as leafy green vegetables, such as kale and broccoli.

Step 3

Strengthen muscles surrounding affected joints. Build muscles to increase flexibility and vigor. Participate in low-impact exercise classes such as water aerobics and biking. Practice stretching exercises that will increase range of motion. Discuss your exercise program with a physical or occupational therapist.

Step 4

Incorporate relaxation techniques into your lifestyle. Practice yoga or meditate daily. Include deep breathing exercises in the daily routine; focus on slowly inhaling and exhaling.

Step 5

Mix several drops of eucalyptus oil into 1 tbsp. of olive oil. Massage and rub onto the affected joints, as needed. You can use other essential oils, including sage, thyme and lavender.

Step 6

Increase your vitamin C consumption. Take 500 mg tablets in the morning and at night. Consume foods such as orange juice and grapefruit to fight off arthritis symptoms.
