Itching sounds like a simplistic problem--with the exception of wanting to scratch every itch regardless of its location. Dry Skin
Known as xerosis, dry skin is the result of certain environmental factors a person can control either partially or completely. These include using air conditioning, hot or cold weather and the humidity levels accompanying it and bathing too frequently. Unlike other causes of itchy skin, dry skin does not cause any obvious changes to the skin, such as a rash.
Health Conditions
Itchy skin can indicate underlying health conditions such as liver disease, kidney failure, leukemia, lymphoma, iron deficiency anemia and thyroid problems, according to MayoClinic.com. If this is the case, the itching usually affects the entire body instead of one particular area.
Pregnancy
A pregnant woman may suffer from itchy skin, especially on her abdomen, thighs, breasts and arms where stretch marks tend to develop. If she had a condition, such as dermatitis prior to becoming pregnant, her pregnancy might make it worse.
Allergic Reactions
Certain substances can irritate the skin, resulting in itchy skin. These include soaps, wool and other chemicals. MayoClinic.com points out that food allergies is another cause, as are allergic reactions to poison ivy or certain types of makeup.
Rashes
Psoriasis, scabies, chickenpox, lice, dermatitis and hives are all skin conditions that cause itchy skin. The itch is typically confined to one area of the body, and bumps, blisters or redness usually accompany the itching.
