Acne and its resulting red scars can have a "devastating" effect on your self-image, warns the University of Southern California's dermatology department. After your skin is clear of acne, don't let any remaining scars destroy your appearance. Several over-the-counter skincare treatments and home lifestyle modifications can help fade these scars and restore your skin's naturally clear, even tone.
Step 1
Get out of the sun. Your red spots are known as postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, and will become more noticeable and darker if exposed to the sun's ultraviolet light. The academy reports that the sun's rays are strongest between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Step 2
Wear sunscreen if you must go outdoors. Ideally, it should possess a minimum SPF of 15, recommends skincare tester Paula Begoun, author of "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me."
Step 3
Apply a skin bleaching cream twice a day or as directed by the manufacturer's instructions for that specific product. For the best results, use a skin bleaching cream that contains 2 percent hydroquinone, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Hydroquinone stops your cells from producing pigment and helps fade any type of discoloration over time.
Step 4
Exfoliate your skin once or twice a week using a product that contains beta hydroxyl acid or alpha hydroxyl acid, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. The acids loosen and slough off surface cells on your skin, helping to accelerate the fading of your skin spots while also helping to reduce the appearance of other signs of skin damage, such as crow's feet.
