Kentucky offers drug and alcohol rehabilitation to residents who struggle with addictions. Residents have a variety of treatment options to choose from, but may be placed on a waiting list if they choose residential treatment or hospitalization, as Kentucky rehab facilities may not have enough room for all the patients seeking help.
Types
Kentucky offers several types of drug rehabilitation centers. People who currently struggle with drug addiction might first visit a hospital based program. Hospital based programs offer detox services to patients--medical care while the patient's body adjusts to not having the drug in its system. After detox, patients may elect residential rehabilitation programs and/or sober living programs. Rehabilitation programs often require the patient to remain on the facility grounds at all times and offer group and individual counseling. Sober living programs have slightly more relaxed rules; residents live together and contribute to the upkeep of the residence as well as work or go to school, and residents are allowed to travel freely as long as they abide by house rules and remain drug-free.
Number of People Needing Drug Treatment
There are approximately 290,000 people using illegal drugs in Kentucky as of August 2010, according to Drug and Alcohol Rehabs. This number does not reflect the number of people who struggle with alcohol addiction. It is often difficult to determine how many alcoholics are in a given area because alcohol is legal and many drinkers self-identify as social drinkers even if others around them believe they have an addiction problem.
Outpatient Treatment
Many Kentucky residents are treated in outpatient programs, according to Drug and Alcohol Rehabs, which states that outpatient programs are often offered as an alternative when there is no space left in residential or hospital-based programs. Outpatient programs involve the patient visiting the rehab facility, clinic or doctor's office for specific treatment and then returning home. Drug and Alcohol Rehabs says this type of treatment is less effective than residential or hospital treatment.
Types of Drugs Abused
The two most common drugs addicts struggle with in Kentucky are marijuana and metamphetamines, according to Drug and Alcohol Rehabs. Cocaine is also often abused. Marijuana and cocaine are especially problematic in Eastern Kentucky, whereas metamphetamine use is a problem throughout the state of Kentucky. Both inpatient and outpatient programs help patients overcome addiction to any or all of these drugs.
