Breaking a smoking habit is a challenge that requires commitment to change and an understanding of the psychological reasons that motivate the smoking habit. People smoke cigarettes for a variety of reasons, explains John Melton, a certified hypnotherapist and instructor. Some smokers rely upon cigarettes to help deal with emotional upset, others out of boredom or to relieve stress. Melton points out that a physical addiction to smoking is easier to address than the emotional factors that fuel the habit. Most professional hypnotists concede smoking cessation is rarely achieved in one hypnosis session, and may be more successful if used in combination with other behavior therapies.
Introductory Session
Step 1
Explain the process of hypnosis. Provide research and information that supports the effectiveness of hypnosis to help break the smoking habit.
Step 2
Discuss the goals of the client and agree upon the benefits that will result from a smoke-free lifestyle.
Step 3
Test the client's susceptibility to hypnotic trance by proposing a simple suggestion that assures the client he remains in control.
Step 4
Teach basic relaxation skills, such as deep breathing and muscle relaxation techniques, which the client can use to achieve relaxation during the hypnosis session.
Step 5
Develop a series of positive affirmations. Short sentences such as "I am smoke-free," and reminders of feelings of well being are more readily accepted by the subconscious, because the mind cannot differentiate between a real or imagined reality.
Hypnosis Session
Step 1
Help the client to enter a trance state by encouraging slow, easy breaths and guiding her through a series of muscle relaxation techniques.
Step 2
Introduce mental imagery that utilizes the senses, and instills a feeling of peace and relaxation of the body and mind.
Step 3
Talk about the benefits of a smoke free lifestyle, and suggest healthy activities to replace the smoking habit.
Step 4
Introduce a physical cue or post-hypnotic suggestion that will help the client to relax and enter into a light trance without an extended induction. Advise the client that it is time to return to full awareness.
Step 5
Encourage the client to practice self-hypnosis on a regular basis, and provide a CD that can be played in private on a regular basis. Schedule a follow-up session to reinforce the initial hypnosis session, and to address any problems or questions that the client may have.
