Fingernail fungus is the presence of fungi under or around the nails. Fungi are tiny microscopic organisms that survive best in dark warm areas. Symptoms of an infection include the whitening or discoloration of the nails, peeling or ragged edges of the nails and fingernails with distorted shape. According to the Mayo Clinic, infections are more common in older adults because their nails grow at a slower pace and experience an increased exposure to fungi over the years. A variety of home remedies are available to treat fingernail fungus.

Vinegar Rinse

Soak hands in a solution of one part apple cider vinegar and two parts water. Immerse nails in the mixture for 15 minutes everyday. Rinse the solution from the hands after each soak and dry well.

Hydrogen Peroxide and Vinegar Drops

Mix a 50/50 solution of hydrogen peroxide and vinegar. Take an eye dropper and drop the peroxide underneath the nail. A small amount of stinging may occur. Repeat daily as desired.

Frequent Hand Washing

Frequent hand washing in general is recommended. Use antibacterial soaps and wash your hands throughout the day. Dry hands well. Avoid sharing towels to decrease the spread of the fungi.

Tea Tree Oil

Massage your hands with tea tree oil. The oil has natural antifungal properties. Rub the nail beds and fingers with the oil on a daily basis.

Nail Length

Keep nails trimmed short. Avoid using nail polishes until the infection has cleared up. Nails may become so infected that they fall off.

Clean Showers

Disinfect all shower and bathroom surfaces so the fungi do not infect the toenails or feet. Use a solution of bleach and water or over-the-counter disinfectant cleaners.
