The Alkalarian Diet was developed by a nutritional microbiologist named Robert O. Young, Ph. D. D.Sc. Dr. Young claims that high acidity levels in the body lead to unbalanced pH, and can cause everything from depression, to fatigue, to skin problems, to heart disease. According to Dr. Young, alkaline foods must make up the bulk of your diet to neutralize acids and balance your pH. The list of foods to avoid on the Alkalarian Diet is almost as long as the foods you are allowed to eat.

Fresh Produce

Most produce, especially green vegetables, are alkaline and can be included in the Alkalarian Diet. This includes avocado, carrot, spinach, broccoli, beet, peppers, cauliflower, parsley, onions, leeks, spinach, tomato, dark lettuce, asparagus and eggplant. The diet recommends eating 80 percent of your food as raw vegetables. Lemons and limes are also included on the list, as are seasonal fruits, once your pH levels are balanced.

Meats and Seafood

Most meats and seafood are taboo on the Alkalarian Diet, but a few are allowed, including salmon, trout and free-range turkey. The turkey should only be eaten on rare occasions. The diet suggests eating meatless proteins such as tofu.

Water

Keeping yourself hydrated with quality, alkaline water is an important element of the Alkalarian Diet. Drink one gallon per day of distilled or reverse osmosis water, and add alkalizing drops if possible.

Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds, when eaten raw and unsalted, can make up a good portion of the snacking in the Alkalarian Diet. Choose almonds, flax seeds, filberts, Brazil nuts, macadamia nuts, pine nuts, pecans, pumpkin, sesame and sunflower seeds for the most alkalinity.

Health Food Store Items

Some food items that may or may not be available in your local supermarket can be included in the diet. Typical health food store items like almond butter and milk, buckwheat, kamut, millet, spelt, soy milk and tahini are some good choices.

Foods You Should Avoid

Any foods that are acid forming, yeast forming or fungus forming should be avoided as part of the Alkalarian Diet. All processed and junk foods, including chocolate, chips, and soda are off limits. According to Dr. Young, peanuts and all types of mushrooms contain fungi and should be eliminated from the diet. Whisky, beer and wine should be avoided, as should baked goods and dairy products due to possible yeast and fungus levels. Highly acidic foods like pork, veal, beef, organ meats, eggs, shrimp, oysters, lunch meats and hot dogs are also off the list. Most fruits, although high in nutrients and fiber, should be limited or avoided because of high sugar levels.
