Effective Toenail Fungus Remedies

The American Academy of Dermatology says that nails are made of a protein called keratin, also found in hair, and that they are essentially hardened skin cells. Nail fungus is a common condition that forms when a nail is infected with bacteria. If conditions do not improve or being to worsen, it is best to see a health care professional.

Baking Soda & Water

According to the 2002 issue of "Natural Health," obtaining a small amount of baking soda and mixing it into a tub of warm water can help to get rid of the bacteria on the toenail. It is recommended for anybody suffering from this condition to soak his foot into a tub filled with baking soda and warm water for around 15 minutes and then rinse it off with warm water. Do this two to three times a week until conditions improve.

Vinegar

According to MayoClinic.com, no studies directly support vinegar effectively treating toenail fungus, but many studies have found that the vinegar can help to stop the bacteria from spreading in the fungus. It suggests soaking the toenail in a mixture of vinegar and water for about 15 to 20 minutes. Ensure that the toenail is rinsed well. Perform this method daily to see results.

Witch Hazel

Drugs.com says that witch hazel contains astringent and hemostatic properties. The "Natural Health" magazine says an effective way to help treat toenail fungus with witch hazel is to soak a cotton ball with the substance and apply it onto the toenail, followed by gentle rubbing for around 10 to 15 minutes. Do this at least three times a week.
