True foods are not genetically engineered. It can be tough to tell which foods are engineered and which are not because food manufacturers are not required to label engineered foods, according to Greenpeace USA. That's why Greenpeace and other organizations release true food shopping lists for people who want to avoid genetically engineered foods, also known as genetically modified organisms or GMOs.
Bread
When buying bread, seek Freya's, Blue Lake, Country Life, Wonder White, Vogel's, Golden Earth, Helgas, Lawson's, Diego's flour and corn tortillas, and any organic bread on the market. Avoid General Mills, Pillsbury, Bakers Delight and Van Den Bergh's, according to the 2010 Truefood Guide.
Baked Goods and Mixes
Among other baked goods and baking mixes, those on the "green," or non-GMO, list include Baker's Choice, Eggo, Kellogg's, Keebler, Naturally Good, Crispix, Big Sister Foods, Edmonds, JJ's Bakehouse and Blue Lake. Avoid Bakers Delight, General Mills, Pillsbury, Van den Bergh, Betty Crocker, General Mills, McCormick and Cadbury Cooking Chocolate, according to the 2010 Truefood Guide. Organic baked goods and baking mixes also are non-GMO.
Beverages
A variety of beverages made by 365, including juice concentrates, are non-GMO, as are Bragg Apple Cider Apple-Cinnamon, soy milks made by Earth Balance, many Meijer Naturals juice concentrates, One Natural Experience coconut water, One World Earl Gray and English Breakfast teas, Silk soy milk products, Traditional Medicinals teas, many Whole Foods Market sodas and Woodstock Farms juice concentrates, according to the Non GMO Project Shopping Guide. All beverages labeled "organic" are on the green list as well. Pepsi, Gatorade and Cadbury drinking chocolate are all on the "red" list of foods to avoid, according to the 2010 Truefood Guide.
Meat
When seeking meat, eggs, dairy products and fish, you are safe when you buy products that are labeled organic. Seek dairy products labeled as having no artificial hormones, rBGH or rBST, according to the Non GMO Shopping Guide. Choose fish that is caught wild and meat that is 100 percent grass-fed. Meats that are labeled as "organic" are OK as well. Though genetically engineered fowl, fish, cows and other livestock were not approved for grocery store shelves as of 2010, the feed that these animals eat often is, according to the Center For Food Safety. Premade meat meals and canned meats that make the Non GMO product list include tuna and salmon products by 365, fish products produced by Natural Sea, Pure Country Pork, and Whole Kitchen Lemon Chicken, Cashew Chicken and Tad Thai with Tofu.
Corn, Canola, Cottonseed and Soy
According to the Center for Food Safety, corn products such as corn oil and high-fructose corn syrup, soy products, canola oil and cottonseed oil are products that likely are genetically engineered unless labeled non-GE, non-GMO or organic, so seek one of these identifiers on the food label. Napa Valley Naturals makes a non-GMO canola oil, as does Sunshine and Dick Smith.
