Delsym, or liquid dextromethorphan polistirex, is a cough suppressant used for colds or flu. It should not be used in conditions where cough is chronic or when there is excessive mucus present such with emphysema and asthma. It works by reducing the cough reflex. Delsym is an extended release suspension dosed as 30 mg of dextromethorphan hydrobromide/ 5 ml.

Effects of Delsym

The mechanism of action is poorly understood. Dextromethorphan is a nonopioid chemical related to levorphanol without pain relieving or addictive properties. Often it is used with antihistamines, decongestants, and expectorants. In high dosages, dextromethorphan can induce hallucinogenic effects.

Gastrointestinal Disturbances and Slight Drowsiness or Dizziness

Adverse effects of dextromethorphan are rare. Nausea, other gastrointestinal disturbances, slight drowsiness and dizziness sometimes occur with little or no central nervous system depression. Even less commonly, confusion, constipation, vomiting and stomach pain may occur.

Symptoms of Overdosage

When more than the prescribed dosage is taken symptoms of over dosage may appear. Blurred vision, confusion, unsteady gait, difficulty urinating, drowsiness, excitement, restlessness, severe irritability, dizziness nausea and/or vomiting, trembling or slowed breathing can occur.
