How to Tighten a NordicTrack Belt

The walking belt on your NordicTrack treadmill may loosen over time. Lift the walking belt on one side of the treadmill. If it lifts more than 3 to 4 inches off the deck, the belt is too loose and needs to be tightened. NordicTrack treadmills have two styles of walking belt adjustments. Look at the bolt on the right side on the back of the treadmill. If this bolt has a hex head, you have a one-adjustment bolt style machine; if this bolt has an Allen wrench head, you have a two-adjustment bolt machine.

Two-Adjustment Bolt Style

Step 1

Remove the magnetic safety key from the console and unplug the treadmill.

Step 2

Use an Allen wrench to turn both rear adjustment bolts clockwise, 1/4 of a turn.

Step 3

Lift the walking belt on one side. If you can still raise it more than 3 to 4 inches, repeat step 2.

Step 4

Run the belt for 3 to 5 minutes. Don't walk on the belt. Watch to make sure it runs smoothly.

One-Adjustment Bolt Style

Step 1

Remove the safety key and unplug the treadmill.

Step 2

Adjust only the right rear bolt. Hold the tension nut in place on one end and place a wrench on the head of the other end of the bolt.

Step 3

Turn the bolt clockwise, 1/4 of a turn, to tighten the belt.

Step 4

Test the belt by lifting it on one side. Readjust as necessary.

Step 5

Run the belt for 3 to 5 minutes to ensure it moves smoothly before using the treadmill.
