Kayaking is a fun and sometimes challenging outdoor activity. Beginners need to learn several skills to become proficient at it, including balance, forward paddling, turning, reverse paddling and the basics of getting into the kayak. Getting into a kayak from the shore can turn into a misadventure if the proper technique is not used. Consider asking an experienced kayaker to help you get into a kayak the first couple of tries--or until you are comfortable.

Step 1

Put the kayak in the water close to the shoreline. Make sure the water is deep enough so you won't run aground after getting into the kayak, recommends ABC-of-Kayaking.com.

Step 2

Hold onto the cockpit of the kayak to prevent it from drifting. Place one blade of your paddle across the kayak behind the cockpit, so that the other blade rests in the sand on the bank or shore. Continue to hold onto the cockpit.

Step 3

Stand with your side next to the kayak, holding onto the cockpit rim on the far side with your closest hand. Hold the paddle with your other hand and use it as a crutch to support yourself.

Step 4

Swing your closest leg into the cockpit of the kayak, keeping your weight low. Push with the paddle and quickly lift your other leg into the cockpit, placing it beside the first leg.

Step 5

Crouch down in the kayak first, and then sit. Let go of the rim and bring the paddle into the kayak. Stretch your legs out and begin to paddle.

Tips and Warnings

  • Remember to put on your life jacket before you get into a kayak. If possible, practice getting in and out of the kayak until you are comfortable.
