Campgrounds in Pennsylvania for Kids Near Train Rides

With several options for both train rides and kid-friendly camping options, Pennsylvania is an ideal destination for train enthusiasts and their families. Some Pennsylvania railroads also offer special events and theme train rides suitable for children. No matter which area of Pennsylvania you plan to visit, there is likely a train ride and campground available to meet your family's needs.

Near Strasburg Railroad

Mill Bridge Camp Resort is located in Strasburg, close to the Strasburg Railroad. This campground provides a number of amenities and activities appropriate for children, including a swimming pool, playground, game room, fishing, basketball, horseshoes and planned children's activities.The Strasburg Railroad provides rides aboard its steam train that takes passengers past Amish farms and historic Strasburg. The railroad also offers special events, such as A Day Out with Thomas and Santa's Paradise Express.

Near New Hope and Ivyland Railroad

Located about a half-hour from the New Hope and Ivyland Railroad is the Colonial Woods Family Camping Resort. This campground provides a swimming pool, spray pool, fishing ponds, miniature golf, basketball, soccer, volleyball, arts and crafts and planned children's activities. The New Hope and Ivyland Railroad is a steam train with vintage, 1920s era passenger cars. Special events aboard the railroad include Song and Story Hour Trains and Sunday brunch.

Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway

Jim Thorpe Camping Resort is located within the Pocono Mountains, in Jim Thorpe. It is near the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, which travels through Lehigh Gorge State Park. Jum Thorpe Camping Resort is a family campground with amenities, such as a wading pool, swimming pool, playground and hiking and biking trails. Aboard the train, you will have the opportunity of sitting in one of the vintage-style, air-conditioned passenger cars or the open-air car.

Pioneer Tunnel and Coal Mine Steam Train

Knoebels Campground is located in Elysburg, about 20 minutes from the Pioneer Tunnel and Coal Mine Steam Train in Ashland. Knoebels Campground shares a property with Knoebels Amusement Resort. For an additional fee, campers have the option of cooling off in the resort's water park, going on rides at the park and taking in a round of golf. The train ride at Pioneer Tunnel travels along the side of Mahanoy Mountain, educating passengers about the history of strip mining. You can also take a tour inside the coal mine tunnel, which will bring you 1,800 feet into the tunnel on an open mine car.

Tioga Central Railroad

If you are planning a trip on the Tioga Central Railroad, you may want to stay at the Canyon County Campground. Both the railroad and campground are located in Wellsboro. Canyon County Campground, located along the eastern rim of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, provides a game room, playground and a campground store. The nearby Tioga Central Railroad offers several rail options, including a trip to Lake Hammond, dining trains and the ice Cream Express.
