On a basic level, generating more speed on your golf swing will translate to longer distances. Almost every golfer would like to add yardage to his tee shot, helping you to get to the green in fewer shots. Although speed on your golf swing is not the sole factor in adding distance, with solid contact and technique being key factors as well, knowing how to maximize the speed on your golf swing can lead to lower scores out on the golf course.

How to Maximize Your Golf Swing Speed

Step 1

Strengthen your legs, specifically your hamstring, thigh and calf muscles. Because much of the power in your golf swing comes from your legs, the stronger your legs, the more power you can generate. With stronger leg muscles, when you shift the weight from your back leg to your front leg, your club will accelerate faster through the downswing.

Step 2

Practice swinging the club with a balanced, even tempo. Simply swinging the club harder does not have positive results, whereas having a rhythmic, smooth swing will lead to the faster clubhead speed you are looking for. Swinging the club with proper mechanics will be more beneficial in maximizing your golf swing speed.

Step 3

Increase your flexibility. Doing routine exercises such as stretching, yoga or Pilates will help to increase your flexibility and range of motion and get rid of stiffness and tension in your body. If you have a maximized range of motion, you will be able to generate more torque on your swing, which will result in a faster swing speed.
