When removing hair at home, most people resort to common methods such as shaving and tweezing. According to American Family Physician, most people remove hair using these two methods. Although shaving is ideal for removing hair from large areas such as the legs, it is not ideal for removing female facial hair due to the regrowth stubble and shadow associated with shaving. Regrowth occurs 24 to 48 hours after shaving. In cases of female facial hair, waxing often works best as it removes the entire hair shaft and root bulb, resulting in smooth skin for several weeks. Tweezing works well when dealing with sparse hair growth.
Shaving
Step 1
Pour or splash warm water on the area to be shaved. Squeeze out a quarter-sized amount of shaving cream in the palm of one hand. Rub your hands together to bring the shaving cream up to a rich lather. Rub the cream on the area to be shaved in the direction of hair growth.
Step 2
Lightly run the head of the disposable razor along the skin in the direction of hair growth to remove hair. Work in long, sweeping sections and overlap sections to ensure complete hair removal.
Step 3
Rinse hair and leftover shaving cream away with warm water.
Waxing
Step 1
Remove lid from wax container, and heat wax in the microwave or in a saucepan filled with water. Stir wax to ensure an even, liquid consistency throughout. Test the temperature of the wax on your wrist. The wax should be warm and fluid but not scalding.
Step 2
Spread a thin layer of wax onto the skin in the direction of hair growth using the wooden craft stick. Place a waxing strip on top of the wax and press it down firmly into the wax.
Step 3
Pull the strip off quickly against the hair growth using a parallel motion that remains close to the body. Tweeze away any remaining hairs.
Tips and Warnings
- Use baby oil to remove leftover wax and soothe the skin.
- Never wax the same section of skin twice in the same session. Tweeze remaining hairs or wait three to five days before attempting to wax the area again. Do not wax immediately after sunbathing or visiting the tanning bed. Doing so may result in skin irritation and burns.
