Chemical peels use a solution to separate and peel layers off the skin to remove the dead skin cells. After the procedure, the regenerated skin typically has a smoother, less wrinkled, and even toned color and appearance, according to University of Maryland Medical Center. Chemical peels are available over the counter from experienced personnel at a salon or spa or your doctor's office. The formulation of the peel depends on the type you purchase or request and may include ingredients such as phenol, tricholoroacetic acid or alpha hydroxy acid. Consult your health care provider on which formulation would be the best option for you.
Step 1
Understand the manufacturer's instructions on the label. Pay attention to application method, warnings and tips.
Step 2
Wash the skin with mild soap and water. Removing the dirt and oil helps prepare the skin for the chemical peel procedure.
Step 3
Apply the chemical peel product in the targeted skin area. Avoid the eyes, nose and mouth area around the face. If the product gets into your eyes, flush your eyes with water for a minimum of 15 seconds. If irritation persists, contact your doctor.
Step 4
Wash your hands with soap and water to remove the chemical product and then dry with a towel.
Step 5
Monitor the time by setting a timer or checking your watch or clock. Follow the recommended time line for leaving the product on your skin.
Step 6
Pull the chemical peel off. Start with one end and gently pull the peel off the skin. You may need to take the fingernail on your index finger to loosen up the edge of the peel.
Step 7
Rinse the skin area with warm water. Wipe down the area with a warm, wet washcloth using gentle strokes to remove any peel left on the skin. Splash cold water on the skin and pat your skin dry with a towel.
Step 8
Put on a moisturizer. Chemical peels may increase the dryness of your skin and a moisturizer will help rehydrate the skin.
Tips and Warnings
- Test a small area of your skin by performing a patch test for sensitivity. In addition, wearing sunscreen is advisable to protect the skin after a chemical peel.
