How to Diagnose Scabies

Scabies is caused by mites burrowing under the skin. These mites have been bothering humans for over 2500 years, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. This infestation causes irritation to the skin which, in turn, causes itching. Scabies can be found anywhere on the body, especially warm places, including folds of the skin or where clothing is tight. Scabies can cause constant itching, especially at night.

Step 1

Note intense itching that begins suddenly, and mark this day on a calendar so the date can be reported to a physician, if needed.

Step 2

Notice any red marks or little bumps appearing on the skin. They may look like hives or tiny pimples. The mites may burrow in a zigzag line, according to American Social Health Association. Draw a map of these areas to help the doctor locate affected areas.

Step 3

Consult your doctor or dermatologist. He will do a thorough examination of your entire body under bright lights to look for mites.

Tips and Warnings

  • Scabies are easily treatable. There are several medications that can get rid of the mites, and eventually get rid of the itching. Consult your physician for medication recommendations.
  • Scabies are contagious. If one member of your family, school or organization is diagnosed with scabies, it is recommended that all who have come in close contact seek treatment.
