United Healthcare Inc. is a national health insurance group with two primary and six specialty offices in Arizona. The corporation's national network includes 632,000 health care professionals, such as doctors, nurses and technicians; 80,000 dentists and 5,060 hospitals. In 2010, United Healthcare was awarded the Hispanic Health Leadership Award by the National Hispanic Medical Association. Between 2007 and 2009, the company received 18 similar awards.

United Healthcare, Inc. is division of the United Health Group. United Health Group's many subsidiaries and affiliations form the largest provider of health care in the United States. In addition to providing health care, the group monitors government health care reform legislation and works with governmental agencies to ensure trust, accountability, and quality, affordability, access and simplicity in America's health care system. The United Health Group corporate headquarters are in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

History

United Healthcare, Inc. was founded in 1977. In 1979, the corporation created the first consumer choice health care option in the United States by introducing the open access of products to clients. In the same year, the company also introduced the first network-based health care planed designed exclusively for senior citizens. In the subsequent 25 years, United Healthcare developed mental health and chemical dependency coverage, eliminated the need for physician referrals and launched an interactive web portal for clients.

Goals

The four main goals of United Healthcare, which extend across the company's many branches, including those in Arizona, are to improve the quality and effectiveness of health care in the United States, enhance clients' access to health care benefits, provide services and products that make health care more affordable and employ technologies that make the health care industry easier to navigate. The company is committed to improving the health care industry through research, and has spent nearly $3 billion to this end in the first decade of the 21st century..

Controversy

Arizona United Healthcare Inc.'s parent company, United Health Group, has been embroiled in a number of scandals in the 21st Century. As reported by the Los Angeles Times, a 2008 survey found that 91 percent of hospital executives thought of United Health Group in an unfavorable light. In 2007, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission reported that former United Health Group CEO William W. McGuire, MD, was found guilty of insider trading. The Commission demanded $468 million in remuneration for the scandal, and an additional $7 million in civil penalties.

Health Care Policies

United Healthcare has a number of policies. The policies are split into "individuals & families" and "group" categories, and are further divided still. In the group category, policies are divided by number of insured members within each group. These groups range from two people to more than 5,000. For small businesses in Arizona, United Healthcare offers the specially developed Arizona Small Business Plan. Plans for individuals and families are short-term medical, student coverage, copay, high-deductible and health savings account.
