Riding backwards on your BMX bike may seem intimidating at first. Learning how to ride backwards, also known as fakie, can be incorporated into all types of tricks including handlebar spins and bike rotations. A common mistake that many inexperienced BMX riders make involves attempting to look over their shoulder as the bike begins to roll backwards. This movement shifts the weight of the rider to one side of the bike and can often cause the bike to tip over. The rider should try and maintain a centered riding stance when undertaking the fakie roll.
Step 1
Push the right and left pedal of your BMX forwards to propel your bike towards an inclined bank ramp. Stop the forward pedaling motion as your bike reaches the peak of the bank ramp. Move your handlebars to the left and right to steady yourself as your bike comes to a halt.
Step 2
Look forward as your bike starts to progress in the fakie direction to center your body over the frame of your BMX bike. Move your feet in a clockwise motion as the pedals of the bike begin to spin in a backwards directions. Bend your knees to stabilize the bike as the tires roll down the inclined bank ramp and onto the flat ground away from the bottom of the ramp.
Step 3
Press the bottoms of your feet slightly forward against the two bike pedals to create resistance and slow the momentum of your backwards riding. Turn your handlebars to the left in a 45-degree angle as your momentum begins to slow. Lean your body to the left as your front wheel starts to roll towards the right.
Step 4
Turn your head to the right as your body spins 180 degrees and the front wheel whips around to face the bike in a forward direction. Straighten your handlebars to steady your bike as it slowly rolls forward. Push forward on the right and left pedal of your BMX to complete your backwards ride.
