Chantix, also known as varenicline, is a drug used to help people stop smoking. While it can be an effective smoking-cessation tool, there are also several side effects of Chantix that can be difficult to overcome. These side effects range in severity from very mild to severe enough to warrant a dosage adjustment or a change to another drug.
Sleep Disturbances
This drug can cause sleep disturbances that make it difficult to get a restful night's sleep. Chantix users report difficulty getting to sleep, difficulty staying asleep and unusual dreams. Not getting enough quality sleep can reduce energy levels and make it difficult to concentrate during the day, so it is important that this side effect be reported to a physician.
Digestive Effects
Like many other drugs, Chantix is taken by mouth. As a result, the digestive system may be affected by the drug or some of its ingredients. This drug can cause nausea, constipation, changes in taste and flatulence. Some of these side effects may be eased by taking the pill with food. Ask your doctor if you can take Chantix with meals to relieve undesirable side effects.
General Effects
Some side effects of Chantix affect the entire body instead of just one body system. Drowsiness has been reported as a side effect of this drug, so do not drive or operate mechanical equipment until you understand the effect that Chantix has on your ability to react quickly and concentrate on what you are doing. This drug can also cause a headache. If the headache persists, consult a medical professional for advice on how to relieve the pain.
Psychiatric Effects
While they occur infrequently, there are some psychiatric side effects associated with this drug. Be aware of mood changes such as aggressiveness, unusual thoughts, agitation and unusual behaviors. Stop taking this drug immediately and consult a medical professional if you experience depression or suicidal thoughts.
Allergic Reaction
It is possible for this drug to cause an allergic reaction if someone is allergic to any of the ingredients in each pill. Seek immediate medical care if any of the symptoms of a severe allergic reaction occur. They include hives, itching, rash, wheezing and swelling of the throat, lips, tongue and face.
