Lumigan, a brand name of the medication bimatoprost ophthalmic, treats glaucoma and other causes of high pressure inside the eye. Patients who have been prescribed Lumigan should learn to use the medication properly for maximum effectiveness and should always talk to a doctor about any questions or concerns about its use.

Step 1

Visit a doctor. Lumigan is a prescription medication, so you must see a doctor before you can obtain the medication. Discuss your medical history with a doctor, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of Lumigan.

Step 2

Pull down on the lower eyelid. Tilt your head back and position the dropper above the eye with the tip of the dropper facing down. Look toward the ceiling. Avoid looking toward the dropper.

Step 3

Squeeze out one drop and close your eye. Press your finger on the inner corner of your eye nearest to the nose to keep the liquid from draining into the tear duct. Hold your finger there for approximately one minute.

Step 4

Wait five minutes and put in the next drop, if necessary. Although most patients use only one drop a day in the affected eye, according to the Lumigan prescribing information, some may require additional drops. Patients should always follow the specific instructions given to them by their doctor.

Step 5

Watch for unusual side effects. The most common side effects of Lumigan are eyelash growth, itchy eyes and eye redness, according to the Lumigan website. Darkening of eye color, eyelid skin and eyelashes also may occur. These side effects are generally not serious, but call a doctor if you are concerned about these or other side effects.

Tips and Warnings

  • Taking your drops before or after a routine that is already firmly established, such as brushing your teeth, may make it easier to remember to take the drops each day. Alarm clocks, cell phones and reminder notes may also help.
  • Do not use Lumigan while wearing contact lenses. Wait a minimum of 15 minutes after putting Lumigan eyedrops into your eye before putting in your contact lenses, warns Drugs.com The Lumigan dropper may become contaminated and cause an infection if it touches any surface, including your eyes or hands. Always call a doctor if you suspect you are developing an eye infection or if you injure your eye while taking Lumigan.
