The exact cause of chronic fatigue syndrome is unknown, so the disease is diagnosed based on its symptoms. A diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome requires that specific symptoms are present for at least six months, according to MedlinePlus. The main symptom is severe fatigue that is not relieved by bed rest and interferes with daily activity. Other possible accompanying symptoms include forgetfulness, headaches, joint pain, swollen lymph nodes, low fever, muscle aches, muscle weakness and sore throat. Because there is no known cause of chronic fatigue syndrome, treatment focuses on relieving individual symptoms and usually consists of a combination of a balanced diet, medication, cognitive therapy and regular sleep patterns. Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormones to meet the needs of the body.
