When dead skin cells and sebum combine with dirt in the pores of your face, they form a blockage much like a tiny plug. Exposure to the air oxidizes this plug, making it turn black, which is why we call these blockages blackheads. The potential causes of blackheads are numerous. Anything from poor washing habits to an excess of oil production can contribute to clogged pores, which may lead to blackheads, so try different treatments to see what works to keep your pores clear.

Step 1

Use a tool called a comedone extractor, which you can buy wherever beauty products are sold. A comedone is a metal device with a small loop at one end. Place the loop against your face parallel to your skin so it surrounds your blackhead. Gently press the tool against your skin, applying pressure until the hardened dirt and oil squeezes out of the pore. Do not press too hard or you will bruise or cut your skin.

Step 2

Exfoliate your skin using a product that contains microbeads. These beads will not cause microtears in your skin the way products using pulverized shell might. Rub the product gently across your skin with your fingertips for 30 seconds to loosen and remove blackheads. Rinse with warm water and follow with a splash of cool water.

Step 3

Steam your pores open by leaning your face over a bowl of hot water. Drape a towel over the back of your head and the rim of the bowl to help hold in the steam. When your skin feels damp from sweat, indicating that your pores have opened, use a damp cloth to gently wipe dirt and oil off your face. Rinse and splash with cool water to tighten your pores again.

Step 4

Try over-the-counter medicines to keep your skin clear. Products containing benzoyl peroxide may reduce the production of oil, which contributes to blackhead formation. Look for products containing salicylic acid to clear blackheads by breaking down the hardened oil and dead skin cells, making them easier to wash away.

Step 5

Try blackhead removal pore strips. Apply the strip to your skin according to the package directions and remove as directed. The process usually involves placing the strip on your nose or cheeks, wetting it and peeling it off when the strip is dry.
