When you walk into just about any gym or fitness center you will see many weight machines available for use. While initially these machines may seem intimidating, they are actually easy to use and effective tools for developing strength and improving overall fitness and health. Many health clubs will even offer an initial orientation with the machines to further your comfort level and set you on the path to self improvement.
Ease of Use
One of the greatest benefits of using weight machines is that they are relatively user-friendly. They require little to no expertise to use properly. Most new models have directions clearly printed on a plaque located at a highly visible point of the machine. Although plate-loaded and tension machines exist, most weight machine adjustments of position and weight are done by very simple procedures, such as turning a dial or moving a pin. Additionally, weight machines have the ability to accommodate people with special limitations.
Controlled Motion
Unlike free weights, the motion used in weight machines is much more controlled. This means that there is less chance of performing an exercise incorrectly. Performing each exercise correctly is not only important to working the intended muscles, but also helps reduce the risk of injury. This is what makes weight machines a great choice when rehabilitating an injury. There is also less need for a spotter than when using free weights because the machines guide your motion---which is typically one of the primary roles of a spotter.
Lowered Risk of Injury
Weight machines offer a lower risk of injury compared to free weights. The fact that the machines guide your motion, along with the fact that most machines have safety mechanisms built in, result in less risk of injury. Unlike with free weights, you are not holding the weights by your hands so there is no risk of dropping the weights on yourself or others. In addition, less balance is needed when working with weight machines, lowering the risk of injury due to compensating or falling.
Improved Strength
The benefit of improved strength is the most desired effect of using weight machines. Weight machines allow for targeted strength gains. Each weight machine works a specific muscle group. This is what makes weight machines an important part of any workout.
Improved Overall Health
Along with improved strength, there are other health benefits of using weight machines. Body composition improves as you use weight machines to gain muscle and lose fat. Using weight machines can improve bone density and joint health, reduce the risk for hypertension and high cholesterol, as well as increase energy levels.
