If you're expecting a new baby, planning for your little one's arrival can be overwhelming. The wide range of baby products available can make it difficult to distinguish between necessities and extras. First-time moms in particular may be confused about what exactly they need to have on hand, and in what quantities. Whether you're preparing for the birth of your first or fifth child, it's important to make sure you understand what basic things you need to prepare for a baby.

Diapers

Your baby will go through a lot of diapers---especially in the early months---so it's important to have a supply already on hand. If you're using disposable diapers, stocking up on different sizes can help you to keep up as your baby grows. Typically, babies start out wearing newborn size and transition fairly quickly to size 1 or 2 diapers. If you're using cloth diapers, you'll need to purchase pins or fabric hook-and-loop fasteners, such as Velcro. You will also need wipes, lotion, rash ointment and/or baby powder.

Bassinet or Crib

Your baby will need somewhere to sleep, and a bassinet or crib are the two most common choices. According to The New Parents Guide, you can start your baby in a bassinet and transition her to a crib at 6 months. Some parents choose to start their baby out in the crib right away. You will also need a mattress and bedding for your bassinet or crib. Bedding basics include two to three fitted sheets, a quilted bumper, four to five receiving blankets and one or two blankets for swaddling. Mattress pads and waterproof liners are optional.

Car Seat

Before you can bring your new baby home from the hospital, you'll need to have the right kind of car seat. The New Parents Guide recommends a rear-facing infant or convertible car seat---each state has different regulations regarding what kind of car seats you can use. If you're having trouble installing your car seat, your local police or fire department can help.

Clothing

When purchasing clothes for your baby, it's important to consider functionality and comfort versus style. The website for "Real Simple" magazine recommends stocking up on basics rather than purchasing frilly outfits that your baby may stain or quickly outgrow. Your basic baby layette should include two to four bibs, two to four hats, one or two jackets or sweaters, nine to 12 pairs of socks or booties, a pair of no-scratch mittens, three to five pairs of pants, four to six body suits and undershirts, four to six zip-up sleepers and four to six T-shirts. You may want to purchase these items in different sizes to accommodate your baby's growth.

Feeding Equipment and Supplies

If you're breastfeeding, all you may need to purchase is a breast pump, milk storage bags, nursing pads and a comfortable nursing bra. A nursing pillow can also help to make breastfeeding more comfortable for you and your baby. If you're bottle feeding, "Real Simple" recommends purchasing four to six bottles in different sizes, replacement nipples, a bottle brush and caddy, pacifiers and formula.
