Stretch marks, also called striae gravidarum, affect more than half of all pregnant women, states Dr. James Brann, according to Hip Chick Pregnancy Guide. These striae occur due to rapid and excessive stretching of the skin during pregnancy, sudden weight gain and in some body builders during muscle development. Stretch marks may be treated with certain creams; check with your health care provider before using if you are pregnant.
Cocoa Butter
Cocoa butter is obtained from cocoa beans. It's an edible, pale yellow vegetable fat that contains a rich supply of antioxidants, according to Encyclopedia Britannica. Antioxidants work to protect the body from free radicals that damage skin cells. This makes cocoa butter ideal for use in cosmetic creams and pharmaceutical products. It moisturizes and softens skin tissues and when applied to the abdomen and other areas during pregnancy it works to prevent stretch marks, according to Pregnancy Mentor.
Shea Butter
Shea butter comes from the nut of the fruit from the Kavite tree that is native to the east, west and central regions of Africa. Shea butter is rich in vitamins A and E; both of these vitamins are powerful antioxidants that protect against the damages of free radicals. Shea butter is a rich, creamy moisturizer that helps to add elasticity to the skin. According to Shea Butter Care, shea butter is an anti-wrinkle agent that also helps to reduce and eliminate the stretch marks due to pregnancy weight gain and weight loss.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant, a fat-soluble vitamin and a substance that offers many health benefits. As an antioxidant, it works to fight against the ravages of free radicals, preventing them from damaging the body cells. Vitamin E soothes, heals and moisturizes the skin. According to Pregnancy Mentor, applying a cream that's rich in vitamin E during pregnancy to the abdomen and other areas prone to stretch marks will help prevent their appearance. Always check with your physician before using these creams during pregnancy to protect your baby. Creams with vitamin E may also be used after pregnancy to diminish stretch marks.
