What To Look For

For women, a good sports bra isn't just an accessory, it's a must-have for any sort of physical activity. A sports bra provides comfort, stability and protection for a woman's active lifestyle, and cushions the tender Cooper's ligaments that hold the breasts up. To determine which sports bra is right for you, you must first narrow down your choices by identifying what features you need. Depending on your activity level and chest size, you may need to adjust your sports bra.

Common Pitfalls

Many women make the mistake of buying a bra that not only fits poorly, but isn't designed for their level of impact. If you have a larger chest or engage in high impact activities, thicker shoulder straps will provide more support. Larger cup sizes, C, D or up, will want to buy an encapsulation bra, which supports each breast independently, while smaller cup sizes, such as an A or B, and lower impact activities can use a compression bra, which pushes the breasts against your chest to restrict movement. Although sports bras are commonly made from cotton, a proper sports bra will be made of moisture wicking, stretchy material, as cotton will absorb sweat, causing chafing, irritation and a buildup of bacteria. Always try on a sports bra before you buy to make sure the straps fit correctly, or can be adjusted, the band isn't too tight, and that no oddly placed tags or seams are present, which can scrape the skin during movement.

Where To Buy

Sports bras are readily available at your local "big box" clothing store, sporting goods store, department stores, outlet stores, inside athletic facilities and specialty athletic stores. Many websites offer discounts and a wider variety of sports bras, but you run the risk of not being able to try before you buy.

Cost

A good sports bra will run between $20 and $35, with some major-label brands running up to $50. Because a good sports bra can last for three years or more, buying one that fits your body and lifestyle is worth it in the long run.

Comparison Shopping

The best sports bra for you may be different than the bra another woman your size might wear. Try on different styles, lengths, strap types and materials before deciding. Compare the difference in comfort between straps that cross in the back, or straps that slip over your shoulders, like your everyday bra. Feel how you move in each size of the bra before choosing. Comparing the different sports bras available will ensure you take home the best one for you.
