Testosterone is the hormone responsible for many of the traditionally masculine traits in men such as a deeper voice and facial hair. Testosterone is most active in changing your body during puberty, and your levels will normally begin to diminish during your mid 30s, but certain conditions can cause an increase, or surge, in testosterone levels.

Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia is a genetic condition that can affect your growth and development as a child, as well as your hormone levels throughout life. If you suffer from this condition, you may be deficient in the hormone cortisol. You may also have abnormal levels of mineralocorticoids such as aldosterone, and androgenic hormones such as testosterone. MayoClinic.com notes that this condition can be life-threatening, but that you can lead a normal life with proper treatment. Other symptoms which, along with an increase in testosterone, could indicate this condition include nausea, fatigue, low bone density, low blood pressure, obesity and slow recovery from colds. If you experience early puberty or rapid growth during childhood, these may also indicate that you have congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which there is an excess of thyroid hormone in the body. Because hyperthyroidism increases your metabolic rate, you may notice weight loss, tremors and an increased heart rate as symptoms of this condition. In a study published in the February 1969 issue of the "Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism," researchers found that hyperthyroidism resulted in an increased plasma level of testosterone in both sexes. This condition also affected the levels of other hormones, and disrupted their interactions.

Steroid Use

Taking anabolic steroids will affect your testosterone levels. You may be taking steroids as part of a treatment for certain chronic conditions. If you begin to develop problems due to high testosterone, consult your doctor about possible alternative treatments for your condition.

Adrenal Tumors and Testicular Tumors

The website Lab Tests Online notes that an elevated level of testosterone could indicate the presence of certain types of adrenal or testicular tumors. Fortunately, these condition can be treated if detected early. MedlinePlus lists symptoms of testicular cancer as pain, swelling, and lumps within the testicles or surrounding area. Treatments include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, followed by regular medical checkups.
