Minoxidil, commonly identified by the brand name Rogaine, is the only topical drug approved by the FDA to treat hair loss. It is available over-the-counter in solution and foam preparations. According to the University of Michigan Healthwise Knowledgebase, minoxidil's exact function is not understood; however, it is thought to reduce hair loss and encourage regrowth by increasing hair follicles and enlarging the diameter of hair shafts. Minoxidil is FDA-approved for use by both men and women.

Rogaine Solution

Step 1

Part your hair to expose the area of scalp where hair is thinning.

Step 2

Use the dropper to extract 1 milliliter of Rogaine solution, then apply it to the exposed section of scalp.

Step 3

Use your fingertips to massage the solution into your scalp. Make sure to cover all areas affected by hair loss.

Step 4

Wash your hands to avoid spreading the medicine to other parts of the body. Allow the solution to dry completely before styling your hair.

Rogaine Foam

Step 1

Part your hair to expose the area of scalp to be treated.

Step 2

Squeeze a small amount of Rogaine foam onto your fingertips and work it into the scalp. Cover the target area thoroughly. Rogaine recommends using the product dispenser cap as a guide for measuring the correct amount of foam. Treat hair with about half a capful of product.

Step 3

Wash your hands well. Allow the minoxidil foam to dry before using other hair products.
