Pain therapy can include various methods that are both non-invasive and non-habit-forming. Medication, though effective for common aches and pains, is sometimes dangerous if taken for extended periods, as damage to the body and other side effects can occur. Finding alternative methods for pain can be helpful for those who are unable to use certain medications, due to underlying health conditions, as well as for those who are unable to find relief with medication alone. Inversion therapy, chiropractic therapy, acupuncture and massage therapy are acceptable pain therapies that may offer relief for those with pain related conditions.
Inversion Therapy
Inversion therapy is a method used to relieve pressure on the back, elongate the spine and increase the space between the vertebrae, relieving pressure that can cause pain. The therapy incorporates an inversion table, which is meant to tilt the body in an upside down position. According to the Mayo Clinic, inversion therapy doesn't provide lasting relief from back pain; however, some people find traction temporarily helpful. Risks exist among those with cardiovascular disease or glaucoma, due to the slowing of the heart beat and the increased blood pressure that results from hanging in an awkward position.
Chiropractic Therapy
Chiropractic therapy is a widely used non-surgical treatment for back pain. According to the Mayo Clinic, clinical trials indicate that chiropractic therapy is as safe and effective as conventional treatments, such as exercise and pain medications. Chiropractic care is provided by a chiropractor, whose aim is to restore spinal movement, relieve pain and improve function.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese therapy that has been used for thousands of years. The method works by stimulating pressure points with long slender needles. The theory behind the method is that when pain exists, the opposing energies in the body (known as Yin and Yang) are unbalanced. Acupuncture is thought to work by increasing circulation in the body, blocking pain and releasing endorphins. This therapy is popular in the Unites States and can be used to treat most any condition, weather chronic or acute. Arthritis, sciatica, fibromyalgia, back pain and migraines are some examples of pain-related conditions that could be treated with acupuncture.
Massage Therapy
A relaxing massage is not just an indulgence--it's also a therapy for pain. It can be beneficial for those with chronic pain, or used on occasion to loosen stiff muscles, relieve muscle spasms, increase flexibility, improve circulation, ease movement, relieve tension headaches, promote healing of tissues, reduce pain and swelling related to injury and reduce stress. Massage therapy is recognized as a therapy and like acupuncture dates back thousands of years, though is still a part of modern medicine. Massage therapy can be combined with other medical interventions to control pain. See resources for more on massage therapy.
