A Remedy for Itchy Dry Scalp

Dry skin can occur at any age and for different reasons. Aging skin is generally drier to begin with and becomes drier in the winter and in low humidity climates. When the scalp becomes dry, itching and flaking can lead to dandruff. According to the Mayo Clinic, other causes of dandruff are eczema, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis and contact dermatitis. Common treatments for dry skin of the scalp include medicated shampoos, a healthy diet, exposure to sunlight and changes in personal care habits.

Medicated Shampoos

Medicated shampoos may offer relief from the itching, flaking and dryness associated with dandruff. Shampooing daily with a medicated formula containing any of the following ingredients may be helpful: selenium sulfide, salicylic acid, zinc pyrithione and cool tar. Popular brands include Head & Shoulders, Selsun Blue, Nizoral and Neutrogena T/gel. The Mayo Clinic suggests allowing the shampoo to sit on the scalp for at least 5 minutes with each use. Alternating between formulas may also be beneficial.

Personal Care

Stress can trigger dandruff and make existing conditions worse, according to the Mayo Clinic. For those with a dry scalp, managing stress may be a remedy for controlling skin conditions and improving overall health. Other techniques for managing dry scalp include exposing yourself to sun, which can be good for dandruff (avoid sunbathing, however, as ultraviolet rays can be damaging) and avoiding the use of too many hair products like gels, waxes, styling creams and hair dyes, which can cause irritation, redness, itching and scaling.

Diet

Healthy eating goes a long way, not just for weight management and weight loss, but for aiding the skin, bones and body functions. According to the Mayo Clinic, a diet rich in vitamins and minerals such as zinc, B vitamins and healthy fats may help prevent dry scalp conditions like dandruff.
