To dry hair fast, you're probably tempted to blast your blow dryer on the highest speed and the hottest setting. That's a fast way to fry your hair, but not the best way to dry it. Everyone has about 100,000 hairs on their head, according to TeensHealth. But not everyone's hair dries the same. Curly hair dries faster because air flows through the curls easier, cites Paul Mitchell educator Barbara Lhotan. Blond hair dries slower than brunette and red hair because blonds have more hairs on their head, adds TeensHealth. Safely blow drying hair fast requires practice and the proper tools.

Step 1

Remove excess water with a towel before turning on the blow dryer. Divide your hair into sections and press each section of your hair between the towel. Rubbing your hair with a towel can cause breakage.

Step 2

Brush your hair to remove any tangles.

Step 3

Apply your desired styling products in a small amount. Blow-dries last longer when less styling products are used, says Jon Charles, owner of a Memphis hair salon.

Step 4

Divide your hair into top and bottom sections and secure with clips.

Step 5

Add a diffuser attachment to your blow dryer. Diffuser attachments help prevent frizz and also help focus the air on one section of hair at a time.

Step 6

Turn the dryer on high. If you don't have a diffuser attachment, turn the dryer on medium.

Step 7

Point the dryer up your neck and dry the bottom section of your hair first. Focus on the roots and move outward to the tips. Do not shake the dryer back and forth; smoothly move the dryer from one area to the next.

Step 8

Remove one clip from the top section of hair and repeat, drying the roots first. Continue removing clips one at a time and drying each section.

Step 9

Stop when your hair is 90 percent dry. Leaving the last 10 percent to air-dry helps prevent frizz.

Tips and Warnings

  • Different hair styles require different hair-drying techniques. For straight hair without a lot of body, point the blow dryer down rather than up. You don't have to buy a salon quality hair dryer, but your hair dryer should be at least 1,800 watts and have tourmaline, ceramic and ionic features.
  • Do not point the dryer directly at your scalp; this causes hair to frizz.
