New runners are often surprised at the price tag on running socks. A decent pair of running socks can cost $10 or more. It might seem expensive, but how much would you pay to avoid a blister on a long run?

Cushioning

The most important function of a sock is to keep your foot cushioned and protected from chafing. A cheap sock will wear out in no time, and you'll be stuck with a blister or worse.

Keeping It Dry

Running socks should absorb moisture, to the extent possible. Wet socks can lead to blisters, which can lead to more painful and less frequent running. Look for a sock that wicks away moisture, both from sweaty feet and the outside elements.

Good Material

Good running socks are made from good material. Cotton may be comfortable, but it's also notorious for getting damp and raising blisters. Look for wool or synthetic blends instead. Take your shoes with you when you try socks on; often, extra padding can cramp your feet inside the shoe.

Where to Buy

Specialty running stores are the best places to get socks. Smart store managers will be able to offer advice on the best running socks for wet, cold, dry or rugged running climates, or point you to web sites that offer high-quality socks.
