Alto is a tiny city in eastern Texas that dates its heritage back more than 1,000 years to a settlement of Caddo Indians. Today, the unincorporated community has less than 1,200 people living within its borders, so it may be the perfect spot for you if you find yourself yearning to get away from the rat race for a few days. While you're there, take some time to enjoy the clean air and healthy outdoor activities. The city's surrounding area--southern Cherokee County--has plenty of campgrounds for you to choose from.

Rusk Kampground of America (KOA)

The campground's location will provide you with numerous options for nearby activities, such as walking the longest wooden footbridge in the country, playing golf at the nearby course or visiting a local winery. The camp has 50-amp pull-through sites if you are traveling with an RV. There are also plenty of grounds for tents or rustic cabins if you prefer to sleep within four walls. The campground features amenities such as a saltwater pool and bicycle rentals.

The Texas State Railroad Campground company promises you that nothing compares to waking up to the sound of steam trains running along the tracks. Texas State Railroad Campgrounds, Palestine

The Palestine depot campsite is a little more basic than its sister site in Rusk. There are sites for RVs or tents, but no electricity hookups or showers. On-site activities you may appreciate include a nature trail, a park and a children's playground. This site also provides easy access to the city of Alto.
