Skin tags are small flaps of skin connected to the body by a stalk. They range in size from very tiny to the size of a grape. According to the Cleveland Clinic website, skin tags are benign and harmless. However, it may feel uncomfortable if your clothes or jewelry rub against them. It is not completely understood what causes skin tags although they are more common on women and older adults. Skin tags can be unsightly and most people want them removed for cosmetic reasons.

Step 1

Dab the skin tag and the blades of the clippers with rubbing alcohol.

Step 2

Wrap dental floss around the base of the skin tag. Pull the floss tight and tie a knot.

Step 3

Use the clippers to cut off the skin tag right above the dental floss.

Step 4

Apply pressure to the spot if it bleeds. Skin tags should not bleed a lot, but there may be a small amount.

Step 5

Rub antibacterial cream on the spot until it completely heals.

Tips and Warnings

  • Consult your doctor if you are not sure what you have is a skin tag. Cutting off a skin tag should be a fairly painless procedure. If you are worried about pain, numb the area a little with a piece of ice before removing the tag.
