The majority of burns are minor and will heal on their own without antibiotics or complicated dressings, according to the University of Utah Health Sciences Center. Third-degree burns, deep second-degree burns or any burn that covers more than 3 inches in diameter, are a medical emergency and must be treated by medical personnel to ensure proper care and healing.
Mild Burns
Step 1
Clean a mild burn with gentle soap and rinse with cool water.
Step 2
Remove blisters and dead skin. If left in place, fluid that collects under the skin may allow bacteria to flourish, delay healing or result in a serious infection.
Step 3
Apply a coating of mild antimicrobial or antibiotic ointment, and cover the burn with a sterile, non-adhesive gauze bandage.
Step 4
Take acetaminophen or ibuprofen to prevent swelling and relieve pain. Remove the gauze bandage, wash gently, and reapply ointment and a new covering each day to keep the burn clean and facilitate healing.
Step 5
Eat a healthy diet and take a daily supplement, extra vitamin C and a fish oil capsule to speed the healing process. The University of Maryland Medical Center notes that certain herbal remedies may speed healing time, but it is important to consult with a physician before self-medicating.
Second-Degree Burns
Step 1
Run cool water over the burn for five to 10 minutes, or cover the burned area with a cool cloth.
Step 2
Leave the blisters in place and refrain from applying a topical ointment. Take acetaminophen or ibuprofen to prevent swelling and relieve pain.
Step 3
Cover the burn with a dry, clean bandage to protect the area from injury and speed healing.
Step 4
Seek medical attention if the burn is still painful after 48 hours, or if signs of infection develop.
Step 5
Follow doctor's instructions for appropriate treatment and care. If medical advice is not available, honey or a bacitracin ointment may be applied to prevent infection and promote healing, according to the UMMC.
