Not all fats are created equal. Some fats, such as those found in cold-pressed olive oil and avocados, are considered beneficial to the body when used in limited amounts. Other fats such as trans fats, however, can be harmful to the body. Trans fats are known to contribute to heart disease, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. They may also raise cholesterol levels in the bloodstream, causing fatty deposits in veins and arteries that can impede blood circulation.

Fast Foods

Items found in fast food restaurants are often loaded with trans fats, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Fried chicken, french fries and deep-fried fish are the most common fast foods that contain these harmful fats. Trans fats are also typically found in fast food biscuits used for breakfast sandwiches. Apple pies and other desserts may also contain these fats.

Margarine and Spreads

Most types of margarine contain high amounts of trans fats, according to the University of Pennsylvania Office of Health Education. Stick and tub margarine are the types most likely to contain trans fats. Shortening, a type of solidified oil favored for its long shelf life, is also loaded with these fats. Natural butter is lower in trans fats than margarine or shortening, although it still contains small amounts of these fats.

Meats and Dairy

Not all trans fats are man-made. Meats and dairy products contain natural trans fats, though at much lower levels than products that contain manufactured trans fats, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Sugary Snacks

The University of Pennsylvania Office of Health Education states that many sugary snacks, such as cakes, donuts and cookies, contain trans fats. Cookies and cakes with frosting are often particularly high in these harmful fats.
