Fitting a standard grip on a standard golf shaft is straightforward--you match the grip size to the shaft size. But for custom sizing, you can mix and match grip sizes and wraps of tape. Proper grip sizing is important because grip size affects your ability to control the club. Grips too small force you to hold on tighter, and the added tension can cut distance. Grips too big can keep you from releasing the club through impact properly and lead to pushed or sliced shots.

Step 1

Measure your dominant hand, from the major crease just under the wrist to the tip of the longest finger. Measure the longest finger from the tip to the base.

Step 2

Compare the measurements against a grip sizing chart, such as the one found on the Golf Grips Direct site listed in the References section. For example, a man with a hand size of 7 3/4 inches and a finger length of 3 1/2 inches requires a standard grip with two wraps of tape.

Step 3

Measure the size of the player's clubs with the caliper. In our example, the player's clubs should have a total diameter between 0.915 inches and 0.925 inches. (ref3) Measure all of the clubs in the set. Cut off any grips that aren't sized properly.

Step 4

Measure the shaft diameter of the clubs that need new grips. Match the grip size to the shaft diameter, with two tape wraps under the grip. In our example, a shaft diameter of 0.60 inches requires a size 60 grip. Match a size 58 grip to a shaft with a 0.58-inch diameter.

Step 5

Follow the grip manufacturer's instructions for installing the grips.

Tips and Warnings

  • Smaller-size grips have thicker walls, so adding a size 58 grip to a 0.60 inch-diameter shaft will make the grip equivalent to a size 60 grip on a 0.60 inch-diameter shaft with two wraps of tape. See the grip sizing chart for other sizing options.
  • Check that the shaft is parallel from the butt to 8 inches down. Some shafts are made with a taper and do not apply to the grip sizing chart applied in our example.
