Thinning hair can be embarrassing and difficult to conceal. Stress, overstyling, excessive damage, age and some medications can cause your hair to fall out or look less voluminous than it used to. To camouflage thinning hair without wearing a scarf or a hat, use products and techniques designed to mask bald spots and make hair appear fuller. You can help encourage new growth by keeping your hair nourished and healthy, and by applying products designed to moisturize strands and stimulate hair at the roots, where growth begins.

Step 1

Color your hair at home, or go to a salon and have it done by a professional. Colorist Kyle White tells "Allure" that the ammonia in hair coloring will swell each strand and make your hair appear thicker. If you have coarse hair, White recommends coloring your hair by applying a clear vegetable gloss. For fine hair, he suggests having your stylist give you both highlights and lowlights to add depth.

Step 2

Wash your hair with a nourishing shampoo and a conditioner that will strengthen it and help prevent breakage, which can make thinning hair worse. If your hair is color-treated, select products that will also help preserve the color for a longer amount of time.

Step 3

Apply a balm or treatment product onto your scalp to stimulate hair regrowth. "Essence" recommends Dr. Miracle's Temple & Nape Gro Balm, which helps to increase the blood flow to your scalp, particularly around your temples and the nape of your neck. Use your fingers to massage the balm onto your scalp twice a day for a few minutes. Do not wash the product out.

Step 4

Apply keratin protein fibers on the areas where you hair is thin. These will latch onto your hair until you wash them out, and create the illusion that your hair is fuller than it is. Both "Essence" and "Allure" recommend Toppik Hair Building Fibers, which contains the same type of organic proteins that your hair consists of. Hold the product a few inches from your head, and shake the fibers onto any thin or bald spots until you achieve the desired coverage. Pat your head to distribute the fibers, and apply more if necessary, then style your hair as you normally would.

Tips and Warnings

  • Wear a hairstyle that hides your hair's thinnest areas. For example, get bangs if you have a receding hairline, or keep your hair short if you have thin hair overall.
  • If you experience significant or sudden hair loss, go see your doctor immediately.
