When the start of a new school year approaches, you will most likely be looking for ways to keep your child healthy. The summer brings lots of outdoor activities, lending itself to running around and athletics. However, at the end of the school day, some children just want to sit on the couch. Find an activity that they enjoy in order to prevent that from happening.
Swimming Lessons
Enrolling your child in swimming lessons will not only let him learn basic swimming skills, but also how to stay safe if a dangerous scenario occurs. You can enroll children as young as 6 months old in a Waterbabies class to acquaint them with the pool. For a more competitive experience, consider letting your advanced swimmer join the Enfield Dolphins Swim Team, which is available year round.
Basketball
Kids can go to the park for a pick up game with friends, but joining an organized league will provide a structured environment, as well as new friendships. Recreational basketball leagues exist for students all the way up until high school. Of course, they may want to join a school-sponsored league as well. For fifth- through eighth-graders interested in a competitive experience, travel teams that play surrounding towns are available.
Dance Lessons
Taking dance lessons not only provides exercise, but also teaches strength, flexibility and dedication. Enroll your children in ballet, tap, jazz, pointe, character or Irish dancing courses at Riley's School of Dance. As of 2010, the studio was proud to host their 71st annual recital, where the fruits of the students' hard work and preparation is displayed. Consider joining a class with your child at the Ballroom Studio for ballroom or Latin dance lessons.
Gymnastics
Gymnastics require focus and concentration, so children will be working their minds as well as their bodies. Starting at the age of 3, little ones can begin learning the skills associated with walking on the balance beam and moving across uneven parallel bars. After those initial lessons, children continue on to higher level courses such as tumbling and cheerleading. Competitive teams are offered for all age levels as well, for children who want a more rigorous program. Look for these programs at the New England School of Gymnastics.
Soccer
Soccer leagues frequently begin in the fall, which is a great way to motivate children to get back into a routine. Even if they are not looking forward to school, they may very well be looking forward to running around with their soccer friends again. Leagues start at the under age 4 division, which is named "Big Kicks, Li'l Goals." Programs continue up until the age of 16, with teams for girls, boys and coeds.
