The development of enlarged breast tissue in a man is called gynecomastia. This condition is common in newborns and adolescents entering puberty. Men who are fully mature may also experience, and be embarrassed by, gynecomastia. Weight management, medication and surgery may cure the enlargement of men's breasts.
Step 1
Schedule an exam with your primary care physician to discuss your condition. Your doctor may take blood samples to determine if your hormone levels are unbalanced and are contributing to gynecomastia. Discuss any medication use with your physician, as enlarged breast tissue may be a side effect of drugs you are taking.
Step 2
Begin a weight-loss plan under the supervision of your medical care provider, if applicable. Some men who are overweight may appear to have enlarged breasts, but the condition often reverses itself when you reach a healthy body weight.
Step 3
Consider taking anti-cancer drugs to reduce the size of your breast tissue. Tamoxifen may cure gynecomastia in some men, according to the Mayo Clinic. Though this drug is FDA-approved to treat cancer, its use to treat gynecomastia has not been approved as of September 2009.
Step 4
Undergo surgery to remove excess breast tissue. You may choose either liposuction to remove fat around the breasts, or a mastectomy, a procedure that removes the entire breast gland and its tissues.
